The Red District Project (RDP) is an artist-run organization that works directly with women in the red light district of Yogyakarta’s Sosrowijayan area, Indonesia. RDP aims to introduce arts and cultural workshops to foster understanding between sex workers and residents living in the area. From May-August 2009, RDP hosted a series of workshops in hand crafts and arts. I directed two theatrical productions, one with women from the area, and the other with children. The final performances involved dance, music and poetry, and were presented at the Sosro Unite! festival. This was first time that many of the women had performed in front of a live audience. The images above have been selected to protect the privacy of the workshop participants involved.
